Mammoet

600.000 – 12.000 jaar oud

Mammoths lived about 600,000 years ago. At that time, the Earth did not look much different from what it looks like now. Between the birth of the mammoths and present-day, there have been three ice ages; Mindel (420,000-470,000), Riss (130,000- 380,000) and Würm (11,650-11,700). During the first two ice age, Mindel and Riss, ice from Scandinavia/north pole reached the northern part of the Netherlands. Due to the large ice caps, the sea level dropped and the North Sea became dry/land. It was thus possible to walk from the Netherlands to England. The mammoth probably died just after the end of the last ice age, about 12,000 years ago. There are strong suspicions that human beings have a large share in it although a change of the climate (warming up) is also mentioned as a cause.
