Quartz

The mineral quartz is one of the most common mineral species in the world.  However, it is not the most common because that is feldspar. Quartz is made up of silica, a compound of silicon and oxygen. It has a chemical formula of SiO2 and has a crystal structure that is characterized by repeating units of six-sided prisms. This structure gives quartz its unique physical and optical properties, such as its transparency, hardness, and ability to refract light.

The mineral quartz is naturally transparent, but due to impurities it can have a different color and therefore often a different name. Pink quartz is called pink quartz. Quartz with a purple color is often called amethyst. Other forms of quartz include, citrine, which is yellow, and smoky quartz, which is brown or gray. Quartz can also be found in a variety of different shapes and sizes, ranging from small crystals to large boulders.

Quartz is used in a wide range of applications, including construction, electronics, and jewelry making. In construction, quartz is used as an aggregate in concrete, as a component in mortar, and as a source of silicon for glass making. In electronics, quartz is used in the manufacture of watches, radios, and other electronic devices. Quartz is also a popular material for making jewelry and is often used in the form of beads, cabochons, and faceted gems.
